Iodine DeficiencyA Major IssueIodine deficiency was common before the 1920’s. Our bodies do not make it so it is important to add it to your diet. An iodine deficiency can cause an enlargement of your thyroid, causing a goiter. Besides being very uncomfortable to have a large lump in your throat, it can cause choking, especially when lying down and also difficulty in swallowing and breathing.
If an expectant mother has iodine deficiency it can cause mental retardation in infants so this can lead to a serious situation. All pregnant women and breast feeding mothers should take a multivitamin containing 150 ug per day.
Some foods that do contain it are breads, cheese, cow’s milk, eggs, frozen yogurt, ice cream, soy milk, soy salt, yogurt, iodized table salt, salt water fish, seaweed, and shellfish. People in the U.S. can avoid iodine deficiency by using iodized table salt.
Iodine deficiency can be diagnosed by measuring iodine levels in urine samples. Over the last 80 years, worldwide efforts have been made to eliminate iodine deficiency. However, iodine deficiency is a major issue in other parts of the world, including Asia, Europe and Africa. Iodized salt has been the main treatment for iodine deficiency worldwide.
Because taking too much can also cause a problem, always consult a physician for the amount of iodized salt or supplement you should take to avoid iodine deficiency. Bone health is also an issue. Click Here |
